The geographic range of all types of Gorillas extends from Lake Victoria to the western coast of central Africa. The range of the Eastern Gorilla is much smaller, and the two types are separated by large swaths of farmed and developed land. Although Gorillas are critically endangered, significant efforts are underway to protect them. Reserves have been set aside, and hunting or capture of Gorillas is illegal. Law enforcement presence is increasing to ensure that protected areas remain sacrosanct. Some gorillas have also been vaccinated against the Ebola virus. Through these efforts, for example, the entire Mountain Gorilla population now lives in protected areas. Significant challenges remain, however, and education and vigilance remain important.
